Tutaenui Branch Rural Women NZ honour two members Tutaenui Hall looked more than festive when, with candles and Christmas colour, the members of the local branch of Rural Women NZ enjoyed the annual celebration. It has been noted that these rural women provide a special meal when they pull out all stops to produce their best recipes, and this time was no exception.

Café cycling in Hawke’s Bay The Rangitikei Tramping club took to their bikes last weekend for a very sweet day on the cycle tracks in the bay. Peter and Darryl Cousins took almost 30 of us to beachside accommodation at Bayview and led us on the 80k Saturday ride. The bay has developed a network of tracks, which are universally flat and mostly link up, with just a short section between tracks involving road. They now have a great asset and it is enjoyed by lots of people cycling, walking, running and exercising dogs. Our route took us past the Napier port where we paused to watch fish were being unloaded. Passing under Bluff Hill we cycled in front of the town and then down to the Ngaruroro river where they have added a cycle lane to the otherwise narrow bridge. The track changed here from the concrete 2.2 metre wide track, to a hard smooth crushed limestone base. It then ran along the stop bank of first the Clive river and then the Tukituki river. We stopped at the Greedy Gannet café in Clive and had coffee in the shade before heading for the next café at Havelock. The Cheese café was expecting us and had sunshine and lunch ready. We had to seek shade in the trees on the terrace as it was such a hot day. Then it was back the same way to Awatoto where we took to the road and found the Filter room of the Cider Tree café. We now stopped for some time and relaxed and rehydrated. It was sobering to tackle the last 20ks to Bayview, and we arrived exhausted. Rain arrived just after we all returned, all that is except local sculptor Stuart, who returned a different route and had a different adventure. He came back via the port getting caught up in a girl’s party celebrating a Darlene’s 28th birthday. He was brought back to earth by the heavy rain that he finished his ride in.

Farndale Avenue Strikes Back Comedy is hard – much harder than drama. Timing is everything, and a missed cue can make the best joke fall flat.
